Crater Lake - Overview
Crater Lake National Park is a great place to visit all year. Hiking in the great scenery, visiting the historic lodge, cross-country skiing, and altitude sickness are all popular activities. It's the deepest lake in the United States at nearly 2,000 feet deep.
For diving, you'll need to get a permit (free) from the Parks Department. From the lodge area, it's a long, 1-mile hike down the crater to the water, and an even tougher 1-mile hike back up at the end of your dive. Visibility limited only by how far the sunlight can go in perfectly clear water.
Altitude at water level is almost 7,000 feet, so both dive time and depth are seriously restricted. The clear water and the novelty of diving in Crater Lake are the main attraction, but there is a helicopter wreck about 1,500 feet down in the middle of the lake. (Good luck.)
Surface temperature in the 40's to maybe 50 in the peak of summer. This place gets 40 FEET of snow in the winter, and much of that goes into the lake. You need a full wetsuit or drysuit to dive here.
Skill Level and Special Skills
The lake is nearly 7,000 elevation at the water level, so altitude restrictions apply. You'll need to be in excellent shape to carry your gear nearly a mile to the water. Get a permit to dive here first.
Hazards
Cold water. Unlimited depth.
Visibility
Go to Safeway and buy a bottle of spring water. There you go.
