Newport Area - Overview

The Newport area is probably one of the most popular ocean diving areas in the state, and offers dive charters to offshore sites. One of the most popular shorediving spots to dive here is off the South Jetty. The "Fingers" are located along the South Jetty at the entrance to Yaquina Bay at Newport. There's a diveshop at the base of the jetty, and they can give you information on conditions.

Other popular destinations include Seal Rock which is located at Seal Rock park, located near about 10 miles south of Newport. I have not personally been to either of these places, so perhaps someone out there can send me a report.

Water Temperature

Upper 40's to low 50's all year. A full wetsuit or drysuit is necessary.

Skill Level and Special Skills

The Oregon Coastal conditions can be incredibly beautiful in both winter and summer. Dive conditions can chage dramatically by seasons and even by the hour, and you'll only want to dive when the conditions are very good. You should be certified and have some cold-water experience, and it's strongly recommended tha you dive with a more experienced diver until you have 20 or 30 cold-water ocean dives under your belt.

Hazards

Diving off the jetty requires some extreme physical fitness, and is generally for advanced divers only. Conditions in the ocean can change rapidly. Cold water, seasickness, and currents can all change your dive plan for the worse.

Visibility

Ranges widely from 0 feet to reliable rumors of 100 feet on the offshore reefs. The best diving is offshore - go with someone who has the boat and equipment, and who knows where to go.
