Whale's Head - Overview

I like this spot. It's North of Brookings, and there is a campground on the East side of the highway (101). If you decide to camp here, there is a lighted culvert about 60 yards long that runs under the mountain and highway so you can walk to the beach. For driving, there is a parking lot with restrooms just above the beach on the ocean side of the highway.

The diving here is like everywhere else in that it requires as much energy as running a 10K. We usually head out from the beach to the cliffs on the North side of the cove. About 75 yards out, you can drop down along the rocks into about 40 feet of water. There are lots of fish here, and the bottom is strewn with huge car-sized boulders, covered with life. It's a pretty good dive when the conditions are cooperating. Visibility varies extremely. Might be wise to first have someone snorkel out to check on the vis before lugging all your gear down and swimming 20 minutes to the dive area.

The good diving is at least 100 yards off the beach, so all divers need to be in good shape. Surf entry & exit. Recommended for intermediates or advanced divers.

Water Temperature

48-52 degrees all year. A full wetsuit or drysuit is absolutely necessary.

Skill Level and Special Skills

Again, you need to be fit and have some endurance to dive this spot, just like most places on the Oregon coast. Plan on low visibility, cold water, and a fairly long surface swim.

Hazards

Surf, low visibility, cold. Sand in your regulator. Conditions can change fast. Stay away from the rocks.

Visibility

The best I've seen it here has been up to 20 feet, which I consider very good for Oregon beach diving.
