Hello Canyon, a glacier carved rift lying between Red Buttes and Kangaroo Mountain, is one of my favorite places to retreat from the hectic pace of modern life. There Toehead Lake, arguably one of the finest natural swimming holes in America, lies in pristine beauty, carved into the shoulder of Kangaroo Mt. From the northern edge of the lake you can look over a rock wall and down the canyon lies Hello Lake and a beautiful waterfall.
During World War II, when East Asian sources of chromite ores were cut off by conflict, there was a mining operation on Kangaroo Mt. The ruin of the Kubli cabin, where the miners stayed can still be seen in the upper canyon.
