GITA - MEANING, NATURE AND SCOPE

What is Gita? Gita is a song. It was sung by the Supreme for the soul when the soul was in a state of melancholy and undergoing the stage of dejection. Gita deals with Supreme wisdom and comes to us in the form of a poetic dialogue. It is a part of Mahabharata, the greatest epic of mankind and consists of only seven hundred verses in 18 chapters.

No one can claim authorship of the Gita, for it was a direct emanation from the mouth of Lord Krishna who is considered an incarnation of the Supreme divine by the Hindus. Gita was compiled by Vedavasya, the great sage of ancient India who has also compiled all the principal scriptures of Vedic India.

What is the subject matter of Gita? Gita deals with the problem of the soul, both individual and universal. It deals with the theory of rebirth of the origin of the universe, the nature of human being, the concept of God and the different philosophies concerning God. It also deals with the concept of time, the meaning and nature of action, mind, intelligence, ego, the concept of duty, natural law and its process, the concept of dharma. It analyses the abstract concepts like devotion, dedication, Self and Self-realization, God realization, enlightenment, samadhi, liberation, nirvana and many other questions that have haunted human mind ever since its creation. It is a beautiful synthesis of different systems of yoga and analyses critically the merits and problems of different approaches to God and god realization. Ultimately Gita has shown a path to perfect perfection and shown the possibility of the dawn of heaven on earth.

Gita speaks of man not as a fallen creature or a sinner, but as a spark of the Supreme truth, Supreme wisdom and Supreme perfection. Gita holds before man a possibility of divine life and the dawn of a new age; an age free from the fear of war, poverty, misery and mutual mass destruction.

As a scripture Gita has no parallel as it teaches collective liberation, not of individual Self realization - Gita does not reflect the world as a shadow of the reality, but glorifies life on earth and assures us of Supreme felicity. Gita's world is not the world of maya, but as a stage for the divine for its lila and its manifestation on earth.

Gita is not a mere scripture for ritual chanting and religious bigotry, but a living force; a compassionate mother, an efficient guide and a burning lamp that shows us the path of immortality and divine delight. It assures us a life to divinity and new world . It is impossible to eulogize Gita, for human vocabulary is awfully inadequate to describe the greatness of Gita. She is all and all is she. Whenever humanity is in crisis, in predicament Gita shows the way. During every transition of civilization, in every turn of consciousness Gita has played its role and has become the harbinger of the New Age. The future of humanity is safe in the hands of Gita and as long as there is Gita with humanity there is not fear of a holocaust, no fear of a dark age, no danger to the divine in man.
